What time do you usually wake up on weekdays?

I am up with my wife and dog at around 6 am.

How do you spend the first hour of your day?

Some days I go for a walk with my dog after greeting my wife. Cold water and warm coffee usually follow.

What sparked your interest in finance?

This was inspired by my father who worked within finance and always encouraged me. My comfort around numbers also helped out.

Can you share some career highlights and defining moments?

Traveling to the US to engage with financial year ends of listed stock exchange companies was one. The other was helping out the little guys (SME’s) within our country and assisting them to help live their dream of starting a company.

How do you handle professional challenges?

I ensure that I am aware of all the variables within a situation, and I tackle them one at a time. Make sure you do not rush into things and always keep the person in mind as most of the time you are dealing with people.

What future goals are you excited about?

Our venture into different markets for financial services and outsourcing individuals with talent solutions is a very exciting next step in this journey. Who knows what this could lead into.

Have you had any international or different cultural experiences in your career?

We have worked with quite a few US clients. They sometimes have a very intense work ethic, which South Africans can easily comprehend. Language is always a key aspect of engaging with any new cultures. One should make sure to focus on the way you interact with everyone to show respect.

What key skills should a newly qualified accountant develop on their path to becoming a CFO?

EQ and communication skills. Learn this art as it will greatly slingshot you to higher heights.

How do you balance your personal and professional life?

I listen to my wife as she sometimes knows me better than myself. 😉 A tip would be to make sure you take the time for the people in your life. Friends and family alike.

What are your interests outside of work?

Traveling as much as possible. Otherwise making music is also a fan favorite.

How do you contribute to the development of others in your field?

We are a dedicated SAICA training office which focuses on Financial Management, and we guide and support junior trainees and junior CFO’s every day to be able to reach their full potential.

What advice would you give to someone aspiring to be a CFO?

Make sure your roots are firmly grounded, and have faith in yourself.

What’s your favorite quote or mantra?

You must choose to be positive- you shouldn’t let it happen to you. Another is that things are never as bad as you believe them to be.

Share your favorite leadership lesson.

Talk less, listen more.

What’s something surprising about you that isn’t in your business bio?

Making music, singing, and playing instruments has always been deeply rooted in me

What’s your favorite non-business app on your phone?

This would be between YT music and my fitness apps. (Mr D could also be a contender)

If you could have any superpower to help you in your job, what would it be?

Being able to comprehend and act on various inputs at the same time (Mr Multitasker)

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?

Exercise without a doubt. Walks with my dog, running, cycling or going to the gym.

If you could relive one day from your professional career, which day would it be and why?

I think the celebration of successes is the best to relive. I am glad that I have quite a few celebrations throughout my journey, and it is key to celebrate each success, no matter how small.
