I start by reading emails in the first hour. After that, I move on to other things and will only check the email if somebody calls to alert me that there’s an email, they want me to attend to.
What sparked your interest in finance?
I always loved working with numbers, and mathematics was one of my favorite subjects. Then I was introduced to accounts in high school, and I just loved the challenge of balancing the balance sheet and cash flows.
Additionally, my academic journey further cemented my finance interest, as I studied for a Bachelor of Commerce Degree majoring in Accounts. I found great satisfaction in deciphering financial statements and understanding market trends. The challenge of financial forecasts based on quantitative data was both stimulating and rewarding. I was particularly drawn to the idea that finance is not just about numbers; it’s about making informed decisions that can significantly affect individuals and businesses alike.
Moreover, influential mentors in my life, including teachers and industry professionals, played a crucial role in shaping my perspective on finance. Their passion for the field and their insights into real-world applications inspired me to pursue a career in this domain. Ultimately, it was the intersection of personal experiences, intellectual challenges, and the guidance of others that led me down the path of finance, where I continue to explore the intricate relationships between finance and executive leadership.

Throughout my career, several highlights and defining moments have significantly shaped my professional journey.
Discovering my passion for personal financial wellness was another transforming experience for me. My career is birthing other branches in finance, and this is one of them. This passion led me to title my dissertation on personal financial wellness, and I believe that once completed, the study will not only be a contribution to academia but will also bring practical initiatives in the workplace in the wellness space.
Attending international finance conferences is always a transformative experience for me. Engaging with industry leaders and participating in discussions about emerging trends broadened my perspective and inspired me to embrace new technologies in finance. It also served as yardsticks for me and my team to see that we were not far behind in the industry, and indeed were ahead in some areas. These exposures motivate my continuous improvement goals which have significantly improved our finance department as well as our decision-making processes.
Most importantly, recently, I was awarded by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants the prestigious Best Public Sector CFO in Africa Award 2023/2024! That just blew me away, it will forever be a pivotal moment in my life.
Moreover, in the same period, 2024, Standard Bank Eswatini also honoured me with the BLUE SHEroes award! To add the cherry on top, our Eswatini Institute of Accounts, recognised my award during the annual dinner and graduation ceremony. These two awards and recognition in the same year, just …..no words!
Lastly, these moments collectively reflect my dedication to personal and professional growth, as well as my passion for contributing to the finance industry. Each experience has not only shaped my skills but also reinforced my commitment to excellence in my career.
How do you handle professional challenges?
Handling professional challenges requires a structured and proactive approach. My first step is to assess the situation thoroughly, identifying the root cause of the obstacle. This involves gathering relevant data and insights to understand the context better.
Once I have a clear picture, I prioritize the challenges based on their impact and urgency.
Next, I develop a plan that outlines potential solutions. This often includes brainstorming alternative approaches and consulting with colleagues or experts to gain diverse perspectives.
Collaboration can lead to innovative solutions that I might not have considered alone.
When tackling difficulties head-on, I maintain a positive mindset and focus on adaptability. Embracing change and being open to new ideas allows me to pivot when necessary. I also set realistic goals and milestones to track progress, which helps in maintaining motivation and accountability.

I am particularly excited about the opportunity to further develop my skills in digitalization, artificial intelligence and machine learning. As technology continues to evolve, I aim to deepen my understanding of these fields to contribute to innovative projects that enhance user experiences and drive efficiency.
On my career path, I am currently trying to acquire a Doctorate in Business Administration. This trajectory is also broadening my skills and opportunities, especially in relation to the subject of the individual’s financial wellness, which is a passion of mine. My dissertation topic covers this subject. I do see myself engaging in future research on various topics which will not only contribute to academia but will also provide practical applicability in the workplace and socially.

As a Swazi woman, this exposure to various cultures has profoundly shaped my professional journey.
What stood out most during these experiences was the power of collaboration across cultural boundaries. For instance, working with colleagues from Brazil and Portugal introduced me to different methodologies in project management that emphasized creativity and flexibility, contrasting with the more structured approaches I was familiar with.
Additionally, I learned the importance of cultural sensitivity and effective communication. Understanding the nuances of each culture helped foster a more inclusive environment, where everyone felt valued and heard. Celebrating cultural differences, such as sharing traditional meals or participating in local customs, strengthened our team bonds and enhanced our collaborative spirit.

To transition from a newly qualified accountant to a Chief Financial Officer (CFO), several key skills are essential:
1. Financial Acumen: A deep understanding of financial principles, reporting, and analysis is fundamental. This includes proficiency in budgeting, forecasting, and financial modelling to make informed strategic decisions.
2. Strategic Thinking: Aspiring CFOs must develop the ability to think long-term and align financial strategies with overall business goals. This involves understanding market trends, competitive positioning, and the broader economic landscape.
3. Leadership and Management Skills: As a CFO, one must lead finance teams and collaborate with other departments. Developing strong interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence, and the ability to inspire and motivate others is crucial.
4. Communication Skills: Effective communication is vital for conveying complex financial information to non-financial stakeholders, including the board of directors and investors. The ability to present data clearly and persuasively is essential.
5. Risk Management: Understanding and managing financial risks is a critical aspect of a CFO’s role. Newly qualified accountants should familiarize themselves with risk assessment frameworks and compliance regulations.
6. Technological Proficiency: Familiarity with financial software, data analytics, and emerging technologies like AI and blockchain can provide a competitive edge in today’s digital landscape.

How do you balance your personal and professional life?
Balancing personal and professional life is indeed a challenge, but it is essential for overall well-being and productivity. Here are some strategies that can help manage this balance effectively:
1. Set Clear Boundaries: Establish specific work hours and stick to them. Communicate these boundaries to colleagues and family to minimize interruptions during personal time. For instance, when writing my dissertation, I set three hours a day during daylight to dedicate to this task; 7 am to 8 am, 1 pm to 2 pm, and 5 pm to 6 pm.
2. Prioritize Tasks: Use tools like to-do lists or digital planners to prioritize tasks based on urgency and importance. This helps in focusing on what truly matters and reduces the feeling of being overwhelmed.
3. Schedule Downtime: Just as you schedule meetings, allocate time for personal activities, hobbies, and relaxation. Treat this time as non-negotiable to ensure you recharge. Microsoft Outlook has this feature that sets focus time for you. I added PDT (personal development time) to it.
4. Practice Mindfulness: Incorporate mindfulness techniques, such as meditation or deep-breathing exercises, to reduce stress and enhance focus. This can improve both personal and professional interactions.
5. Leverage Technology: Use technology to streamline tasks and improve efficiency. Automating routine processes can free up time for personal pursuits.
6. Stay Flexible: Life is unpredictable, so be prepared to adjust your plans as needed. Flexibility can help you manage unexpected challenges without feeling overwhelmed.
7. Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to ask for help from colleagues or family when needed. Building a support network can alleviate stress and foster collaboration.
By implementing these strategies, individuals can create a more harmonious balance between their personal and professional lives, leading to greater satisfaction and productivity in both areas.
What are your interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I engage in a variety of interests that enrich my life and provide a creative outlet. One of my primary passions is ballroom dance. Participating in dance classes and social events helps me connect with others who share this passion.
In addition to dancing, I have a deep appreciation for choral and classical music. I enjoy attending concerts and performances, as well as participating in the choir. Music has a profound ability to evoke emotions and foster connections, making it a significant part of my life.

How do you contribute to the development of others in your field?
Contributing to the development of others in my field is a priority, and I actively engage in several initiatives to support this goal. One of the primary ways I do this is through mentorship. I dedicate time to mentoring junior professionals, offering guidance on career development, technical skills, and industry insights. This one-on-one interaction not only helps mentees navigate their career paths but also fosters a sense of confidence and belonging within the field. I have introduced a mentorship program initiative, to give a structured manner in which mentorship can be successfully implemented
.
I’ve also introduced an accountant’s club within the organisation, which aims at accountant’s development no matter the department they work in.
Additionally, I participate in workshops and training sessions aimed at skill enhancement. By sharing my knowledge and expertise in specific areas, I help colleagues and peers stay updated on industry trends and best practices. These sessions encourage collaborative learning and create a supportive environment for professional growth.
I also contribute to professional networks and associations, where I engage in discussions, share resources, and promote opportunities for continuous learning. By being an active member of these communities, I help facilitate connections among professionals, which can lead to valuable collaborations and knowledge exchange.
Furthermore, I advocate for diversity and inclusion initiatives within the workplace, recognizing that diverse perspectives enhance innovation and problem-solving. By supporting programs that promote underrepresented groups in our field, I contribute to a more equitable environment that nurtures talent from all backgrounds. For instance, we have a women empowerment initiative.
Through these efforts, I aim to empower others, foster a culture of continuous learning, and ultimately contribute to the advancement of our profession as a whole.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to be a CFO?
For someone aspiring to become a CFO, my number one piece of advice is to cultivate a holistic understanding of the business. While technical financial skills are essential, a successful CFO must also grasp the broader organizational context, including operations, marketing, and strategic planning. This comprehensive perspective enables you to make informed decisions that align financial strategies with overall business goals.
Additionally, focus on developing strong leadership and communication skills. As a CFO, you will need to lead finance teams, collaborate with other departments, and communicate complex financial information to stakeholders who may not have a financial background. Being able to convey your insights clearly and persuasively is crucial.
Seek out diverse experiences within your organization. Rotating through different roles—such as operations, sales, or strategic planning—can provide invaluable insights into how various functions contribute to the company’s success. This cross-functional knowledge will enhance your ability to drive financial performance and support strategic initiatives.
Networking is also vital. Build relationships with other finance professionals and industry leaders. Engaging in professional organizations and attending industry events can open doors to mentorship opportunities and valuable connections.
Lastly, stay adaptable and open to continuous learning. The business landscape is constantly evolving, and being proactive in updating your skills and knowledge will position you as a forward-thinking leader.
By focusing on these areas, you can effectively prepare yourself for the challenges and responsibilities of a CFO role.
What’s your favorite quote or mantra?
One of my favorite mantras is “Kaizen,” which means “continuous improvement” in Japanese. This concept inspires me to embrace a mindset of ongoing growth and development, both personally and professionally. It reminds me that even small, incremental changes can lead to significant progress over time. By focusing on continuous improvement, I strive to enhance my skills, processes, and contributions to my team and organization.
Another powerful concept that resonates with me is “ikigai,” which translates to “a reason for being.” This philosophy encourages individuals to find their purpose by aligning their passions, talents, and the needs of the world. It serves as a guiding principle in my life, motivating me to pursue work that is not only fulfilling but also impactful.
Lastly, the phrase
“Leaders create leaders” encapsulates my belief in the importance of mentorship and empowerment.
As a leader, I see it as my responsibility to nurture the potential in others, fostering an environment where team members can grow and thrive. This mantra inspires me to invest in the development of those around me, knowing that by cultivating future leaders, we can achieve greater collective success.

What’s your go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays?
My go-to strategy for staying productive during long workdays involves a combination of physical movement and structured breaks. One effective approach is walking to colleagues to relay messages or tasks instead of relying solely on emails or instant messaging. This not only fosters better communication and collaboration but also provides a brief physical activity that helps refresh my mind and body.
Additionally, I prioritize taking my lunch hour seriously. Stepping away from my desk to enjoy a proper meal allows me to recharge and refocus. I often use this time to disconnect from work-related thoughts, which helps prevent burnout and maintains my overall energy levels throughout the day.
Incorporating these practices into my routine has proven beneficial in maintaining focus and productivity, even during extended hours. The combination of movement and dedicated breaks helps me stay engaged and energized, ultimately enhancing my performance and well-being at work.

What made that day particularly special was the sense of accomplishment and validation it brought. It was a recognition of my commitment to the profession and a steppingstone that opened numerous doors for my future.
